Community Stream Steward Program: Conserving Wetland Landscapes Initiative 2013-2014

Final Project Report: Community Stream Steward Program: Conserving Wetland Landscapes Initiative, 2013-14

Goals and Objectives

Since 2010, the CSSP has been working closely with local partners and agencies as a member of the
Kawartha Farm Stewardship Collaborative. Through this group, we have been able to increase the number
of waterfowl habitat projects completed by leveraging funds with other programs and providing additional
technical advice and support to farmers. By focusing on agricultural conservation and restoration projects
in 2013, this initiative will have a landscape approach to wetland conservation by encouraging multi-use
landscapes which includes maintaining existing agricultural productivity while enhancing and restoring
wetland and upland habitats. This will include the creation and naturalization of pair ponds with suitable
nearby nesting habitat for waterfowl, enhancing existing wetlands through livestock exclusion and
increased buffers, and connecting wetland habitats with upland areas through corridor creation. Through
landowner involvement and partnership support, this initiative will create sustainable conservation,
protection, and enhancement of wetland habitats for waterfowl populations with emphasis in 2013 on rural
farm properties.

Specific Habitat Products/Results Supported by WHC’s Contributions

–          Material and contractor costs for restoration and enhancement projects

–          Venue rental, supplies, advertizing for workshops and events

–          Site visits conducted by CSSP staff will be supported by travel and salary contributions

–          Promotion and education of wetland habitats will be supported by salary contributions

Benefits to Waterfowl, Wetlands-Associated Species, and/or Other Wildlife

The restoration projects will increase the wetland habitats on the landscape as well as the connectivity of
these wetland areas to other upland habitats such as meadow and forest. This initiative will not be aimed
at any specific group of waterfowl, it will instead promote the stewardship of wetland areas and work
towards conservation in a landscape context, as emphasized in the 1998 update of the NAWMP.

Relevance to Habitat Planning, Decision Making and/or Management

The most significant impact of this project will be the direct preservation and enhancement of wetland
ecosystems on private landowner properties. The outreach and education components of the Conserving
Wetland Landscapes Initiative will inform a variety of landowners about the importance of ponds, wetlands,
grasslands, woodlots, and riparian areas to waterfowl and other wildlife. Materials and advice provided
through site visits and workshops will allow landowners to learn about best management practices to maintain
and maximize areas on their property that could be used by waterfowl.
