Building Support for Waterfowl and Wetland Conservation in the Codroy Valley of Newfoundland, 2014-15

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this project is to build local support for the conservation of wetlands and waterfowl in the Codroy Valley of southwest Newfoundland.  The project will update important components of the 1995 Grand Codroy Estuary Wetlands Conservation Plan and 1998 bird checklist, engage new and existing landowners through Good Steward Agreements, and build support among the business and residential community through a focus group and wild foods tasting session.

The project objectives are to increase knowledge and appreciation for the ecological role of the wetlands and waterfowl, engage local residents and businesses in stewardship actions, and promote the uniqueness and value of the Codroy Valley wetlands to the rest of NL and the Atlantic Region.

The goal of this project is to protect the biodiversity and ecological functions of the important wetlands of the Codroy Valley, for the benefit of people and all life.

Specific Habitat Products/Results Supported by WHC’s Contributions

This project will result in updates to the checklist of birds of the Codroy Valley (the most recent published list is from 1998; we will update the list as one of our flat sheets), updates to the 1995 EHJV Grand Codroy Estuary Wetlands Conservation Plan (this will take the form of recommendations to the EHJV staff in Newfoundland and Labrador and a possible new plan in the near future), a field survey sheet for waterfowl monitoring, four informational and illustrated flat sheets on wetlands and birds of the Codroy Valley (birds of the Codroy Valley, waterfowl and wildlife viewing areas in the Valley, ecological services of wetlands, and “what you can do” to protect wetlands), two vertical banners for use at all events in the Valley that promote the wetlands and waterfowl, and results of a focus group session about stewardship practices for landowners and businesses in the Valley.

Benefits to Waterfowl, Wetland-Associated Species, and/or Other Wildlife

This project will promote active bird watching and monitoring of waterfowl in the wetlands and estuaries of the Grand Codroy and Little Codroy rivers.  The project will also promote responsible hunting and voluntary recording of data about waterfowl numbers, as well as all birds, and contributing that data to a centralized location

The project will inform people of the value of wetlands and encourage residents to take stewardship actions for the protection of wetlands and waterfowl. These actions include but are not limited to the following:  avoiding excessive use of lawn fertilizers and pesticides, preventing run-off of pollution, avoiding the use of lead shot, preventing plastic waste from entering aquatic systems, protecting riparian vegetation, protecting eel grass beds, maintaining septic systems, delaying cultivars to protect ground nesting birds, preventing discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus rich detergents, preventing oil spills, clearing shorelines of waste and artificial debris, cleaning out culverts to allow fish passage, clearing watercourse crossings of human-caused barriers, and preventing wood cutting practices that cause excessive erosion.

Project Location

The location of this project is in Codroy Valley, NL.  The Grand Codroy estuary is the only wetland in Newfoundland and Labrador to be given RAMSAR designation as a wetland of international importance.
