Project Eligibility

In recognition of the fact that the purchase of the Habitat Conservation Stamp by waterfowl hunters is the primary source of funding for Wildlife Habitat Canada’s grant program, within its available budget, Wildlife Habitat Canada will primarily support projects involving the participation of multiple partners that:

  • Support the priority activities under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (i.e., securement*, enhancement, management and influence).
  • Support grants for regional and local habitat projects of importance to other migratory game birds.
  • Support grants for the Newfoundland and Labrador Murre Conservation Fund

*Expenditures directly related to the acquisition of land or an interest in land, including a lease, conservation easement or conservation covenant are not eligible for grant funding from Wildlife Habitat Canada.

Competitive Grant Program

  • Projects that support habitat conservation for other important migratory game birds.

Conservation Networking Grants
Wetland Education and/or Hunter Education projects

  • Support habitat conservation networking activities and events, including national or regional stewardship activities
  • Promote the contribution of hunters to habitat conservation

Other factors that will be taken into account when reviewing grant applications include:

  • Projects that contribute to an equitable geographic distribution of Wildlife Habitat Canada support across the country over a broad range of time.
  • The involvement of multiple funding partners.
  • Assurance that a grant funds will be used for project related activity within the specified fiscal year; Wildlife Habitat Canada cannot commit grant funding support to multi-year projects.
  • No single partner will receive more than 20% of the total available Wildlife Habitat Canada grant funding in a given year.
  • Applications must clearly demonstrate a minimum 1:1 funding match ratio (Please note that funding from Environment Canada programs cannot be considered as match).
