About Who We Are

Who We Are

Wildlife Habitat Canada is a national, non-profit, charitable conservation organization established in 1984 by Environment Canada, provincial wildlife agencies and conservation organizations. We work through partnerships with communities, landowners, governments, non-government organizations and industry to find effective solutions to address problems facing wildlife habitat. We are guided by a highly diverse Board of Directors, with representatives named by conservation and government agencies.

Wildlife Habitat Canada is a member of both the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (EHJV) and Prairie Habitat Joint Venture (PHJV) Management Boards, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) and the North American Wetlands Conservation Council (NAWCC) Canada.

Our objectives are to:

  • Promote the conservation, restoration and enhancement of wildlife habitat in order to retain the diversity, distribution and abundance of wildlife
  • Provide a funding mechanism for wildlife habitat conservation programs in Canada
  • Foster coordination and leadership in the conservation community across Canada

We envision a future where Canadians share a conservation ethic that recognizes the fundamental importance of wildlife habitats that are abundant, rich and support biodiversity.

Stamp and Print Program

Wildlife Habitat Canada holds an annual art competition, which is open to Canadian wildlife artists, to select the image for the upcoming Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp and Print. The winning image is unveiled on April 1 every year when the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp is released to the public.

The vast majority of conservation stamps are purchased by waterfowl hunters to validate their federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permits; however, stamps are also sold to print purchasers, stamp collectors, and individuals interested in contributing to the conservation, restoration and enhancement of wildlife habitat in Canada.

Grants

With the support of the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada, a portion of the revenue associated with the sale of the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp is allocated to fund wildlife habitat conservation projects across Canada.

Since 1985, Wildlife Habitat Canada has provided grants of over $60 million to hundreds of habitat conservation projects across the full range of Canadian landscapes and seascapes, as well as all provinces and territories, through its granting program. We have also been an important catalyst of many groundbreaking habitat conservation initiatives, such as Carolinian Canada, and the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.
